Breast Reconstruction

Over the years, I have been privileged to work with the leading plastic surgeons in Houston, Texas. These specialists have dedicated their careers to restore the bodies of women who have survived breast cancer.

Breast Reconstruction surgically rebuilds the breasts and can be done during treatment (immediate) or after (delayed). Surgical methods for reconstruction include:

  • Tissue expander implants: A tissue expander is an inflatable silicone implant that is inserted to the chest after a mastectomy. The implant is designed to expand over time with a saline solution that slowly stretches the breasts to your desired shape.
  • Flap-based reconstruction – The most advanced form of breast reconstruction available today, flap-based surgery uses your own tissue (skin, fat, blood vessels) to reconstruct the best. There are three forms of techniques for this procedure, including:
    • TRAM Flaps – Tissue and blood vessels are taken from the transverse rectus abdomis muscle (TRAM) in the lower abdomen and are used to reconstruct the breasts. Survivors who undergo this procedure often say that the results look and feel the most natural.
TRAM flaps are executed in two ways:

      • Traditional (Pedicled) TRAM Flap – The more traditional way of executing this surgery. The arteries are left in place.
      • Free TRAM Flap – A more complex version of this procedure. A free TRAM Flap utilizes microvascular techniques to sever the arteries connected to the Flap before being reconnected to the chest, allowing a better circulation of blood to the area.
    • DIEP Flap – A popular choice for many patients, the DIEP Flap is similar to the free TRAM Flap, with the exception being that muscles are left in place and are not transplanted to the chest.
    • LatissimusDorsi Flap – An ideal procedure for women with smaller breasts. Skin, muscle, and fat are located in the upper back are repositioned to chest.
  • Tissue and implant reconstruction – This combination of techniques is used in the event you may not have substantial tissue volume, requiring the use of an implant to increase the size of the breast.
